In 1972 Donny Hathaway teamed up with my musical hero Quincy Jones to provide the soundtrack for the movie Come Back Charleston Blue. I remember David Foster saying in an interview that the first piece of wisdom Quincy ever gave him as a producer, was that if you are going to put your name on a product, it better be the absolute best work you are capable of, and nothing less. Every piece of music that I have ever listened to that read “produced by Quincy Jones” has been of the highest quality – his best work. This soundtrack is mostly instrumental, but Hathaway does sing on “Little Ghetto Boy,” one of his best recordings.
