Sample Saturday – Grover Washington Jr. / DMX

It’s been an interesting road for rapper DMX since his debut album in 1998, Its Dark and Hell is Hot.  Six months later he released Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which was his second album that year to debut at number one on the charts, an achievement that had only been done in hip hop by Tupac (All Eyes on Me and The Don Killuminati).

Shirtless album covers are not the only thing linking X’s sophmore effort and Grover Washington Jr.’s Feels So Good.  The track “Moonstreams” starts off with an atmosphere of wind, rain, and a solo woodwind instrument that sets a very melancholy mood.  That loop, layered with female vocals was all producer DJ Shok needed to paint the picture for one of X’s deepest records ever.  ”Slippin” is a song that, after released, seems to have carried out its story in the life of the artist.  DMX was one of the rawest talents the game has ever seen.
