My studio is just down the hall from Mr. Triple-Threat Scram Jones, who has been heavy on his DJ isht as of late. Before he goes out to tear up the club, he often practices some of his sets in the lab. During one of these sets I caught him transitioning into Jay-Z’s “On To The Next One” from the original sample, which at the time I did not now.
The sample is taken from the 2007 Justice track D.A.N.C.E. Swizz Beatz is one of the best at finding these obscure samples and turning them into hit records. The quick phrase comes in at the 1:18 mark, and was all Swizzy needed to craft the song. Sampling in hip hop is usually associated with classic records from the 60’s and 70’s, but the trend of flipping more recent songs has become more popular recently. There’s a million ways to get it.
